Information for Non-Degree Seeking Applicants


Non-Degree seeking students are typically students who desire to:

• take pre-requisite graduate classes to meet the admission requirements for a degree program,
• take classes before their degree program start date,
• meet licensure requirements,
• enrich their personal development.

If you plan on applying to a degree program we strongly recommend you contact the Graduate Director of the program before you apply as a Non-Degree seeking student. Make sure that any classes you take will be considered for transfer credit. Enrollment as a Non-Degree seeking student does not guarantee acceptance into a degree program.

Non-Degree Status

“Applicants who wish to take graduate classes but who do not want to earn a degree are classified as Non-Degree students. All applicants for non-degree status must possess a four-year bachelor’s degree earned at an accredited U.S. institution (or equivalent degree from another country). Subject to the approval of the department and the Dean of The Graduate School, a maximum of nine (9) semester graduate credits taken as a graduate Non-Degree student may subsequently be counted toward a graduate degree subject to all other regulations. Non-Degree students are not eligible for graduate teaching, research, or service assistantships”. (p.210 of the Academic Catalog).

Admission Requirements for Non-Degree Applicants

Applicants must submit an application form and fee of $35 (the application fee is waived for McNair scholars).

Applicants must possess a four-year bachelor’s degree earned at an accredited U.S. institution (or equivalent degree from another country).

Applicants are not required to submit a Statement of Goals, Transcripts, or Letters of Recommendation.

1. Apply Online within your My GradSpace account.
2. In the “Major/Program Information Section” please click here and follow these instructions for identifying yourself as a Non-Degree seeking student
3. Submit the form and pay the $35 application fee. (USD)

Note: An application is only valid for one year from the date of submission.
