We are pleased that you have considered applying to the Graduate School at the University of North Dakota. The following instructions will be helpful to you as you prepare your application packet.
The Graduate School defines a complete application as one that contains all transcripts, test scores, written statements and three letters of recommendation as well as any other program specifics. Applications will not be forwarded to departments for review unless complete.
An application is valid for the original term submitted; a deferred application is valid for one year from the date of submission.
Applicants are able to download the application and recommendation forms on this page. The following instructions will be useful to you as you prepare your application packet. All applicants should make sure the necessary qualifications and deadlines have been met before proceeding with the application process.
We highly recommend using our on-line application. Applying by paper may delay your application processing.

1. APPLY ONLINE or request a paper application by mailing your request to Graduate School Admissions, Twamley Hall Room 414, 264 Centennial Drive, Stop 8178, Grand Forks, ND 58202-8178. Please make sure the application form is legible and that it is signed and dated. Also, please identify your state or province of legal residence for tuition purposes.
2. STATEMENT OF GOALS AND OBJECTIVES. The statement should define and emphasize your special skills, strengths, and goals. It should include academic or professional accomplishments, as well as career goals. The statement should be concise, preferably one to two pages in length. It is used as an indicator of your writing ability, as well as determining whether or not the program suits your needs.
Applicants applying to graduate programs in Early Childhood Education Elementary Education, General Studies, Special Education or Reading Education must submit the personal statement. The personal statement will be submitted instead of the statement of goals and objectives.
3. TRANSCRIPTS. One official copy of all academic transcripts from all colleges and universities you have attended, including undergraduate and graduate course work, must arrive in envelopes sealed by the registrar. Transcripts that have been opened or tampered with will not be accepted. UND Students will need to arrange for their own transcripts.
If you have graduated from a college or university outside of the U.S. or Canada, you must also include an official or attested copy of your diploma or degree certificate sent by the registrar. All documentation must be in English or have an English translation attached. Indian students must provide all official or attested marksheets and a copy of their diploma. Chinese students must provide transcripts plus Graduation Certificate and Degree Diploma. Do not send High School/Intermediate/Secondary transcripts.

4. THREE LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION. It is preferable that the recommendations (references) come from those who can honestly evaluate your potential for graduate study. Reference letters may be submitted in lieu of the Recommendation Forms provided for you.
If you are applying to Speech-Language Pathology or Communication Science Disorders, you must use the program-specific recommendation forms found under Additional Requirements By Program.
5. APPLICATION FEE. A $35 application fee in U.S. funds must accompany each application for admission. The application fee will not be waived or deferred, and it is non-refundable.
NOTE: The application fee is waived if you are a McNair Scholar. You must include a letter of verification from the McNair Coordinator of your school.
6. ADMISSIONS TESTS. All graduate admissions tests (GMAT, GRE, or TOEFL) must be sent directly by Educational Testing Services. The institution code for the University of North Dakota is 6878 for the GRE, TOEFL, and GMAT. The institution code for the MAT is 1380. Photocopies are not accepted. Not all graduate programs require testing for admission—please see the Tests Required for Admission.
Transcripts, references, and/or any other materials sent prior to submission your application, will be kept active for only 6 months. Please send all application materials to the Graduate School, not to the department to which you are applying. Writing Samples or Slides should be sent directly to the department.
Once the Graduate School has received your application, you will be notified via e-mail. It is the applicant’s responsibility to make sure the Graduate School has received all application materials. Therefore periodically checking on the status of your application is advisable. Once your application is complete, it will be forwarded to the department for evaluation. Each graduate program makes its own admission recommendation but the decision is not final until approved by the Graduate School Dean. Note: An application is only valid for one year from the date of submission.

Additional Requirements (By Program) |
If you are applying to any of the following programs, you must complete the additional requirement(s) as listed:
Art Twenty (20) color slides (2” x 2” cardboard or plastic mounted) or appropriate media of representative examples of the student’s recent work. Please submit these directly to the department.
Aviation Statement addressing the following two questions pertaining to the program (submitted in lieu of the Statement of Goals and Objectives).
- Describe several personal or professional goals you would like to achieve in the next five years. Include in your description reasons why these goals are important to you.
- What aviation related problem areas are you considering for your independent study or thesis topic? Explain your interest in the topic and what you may hope to accomplish through the independent study or thesis research. (For departmental planning purposes, please identify if you plan on pursuing the thesis option.)
All applicants must also submit a copy of their FAA private pilot certificate or its foreign equivalent (a copy of the prospective student's commercial pilot, airline transport pilot or flight instructor certificate is also acceptable).
Clinical Laboratory Science Copy of CLS (NCA), MT (ASCP), or equivalent certification examination

English A writing sample of 10-15 pages on topics or in modes appropriate to the proposed program of study (submitted directly to the department).
Music A repertoire list, composition sample, or audition depending on the concentration (submitted directly to the department).
Nursing Copy of current R.N. license and résumé (required for admission into all specialties).
Psychology: All programs (except Forensic) need to provide a resume.
Social Work 1) Copy of current résumé; 2) a signed statement agreeing to abide by UND student ethical standards and ethical standards for social workers (required at time of admission into program.)

*The Department of Social Work application materials will be accepted until the program is filled. Early applicants will receive priority consideration.
All other departments offer fall, spring, and summer admission and have no specific deadlines. However, it is strongly recommended that applications be completed by February 15 for the following fall term and October 15 for the upcoming spring term, if you wish to receive full consideration for admission, since some programs only admit a limited number of applicants. Merit-based financial assistance (fellowships, scholarships, and tuition waivers) are usually awarded by April 15 for the fall semester and November 15 for the spring semester. |
